RIP Palm

Posted on October 1, 2008 - Filed Under Business |

Probably four years ago I dropped $400 on a Palm Pilot Titanium.

Two months later, it took a bath in my coffee.

With the Russians spooling out software for me, I sent along a request to determine how much it would be to write some software for the Palm OS and Windows Mobile.  I’m of the honest opinion that the mobile market is now ready to come into view as a viable alternative to the desktop computer.

Russian:  Palm is dead.
Clifford:  It’s dead?
Russian:  Da.

Wow.  I remember when Palm was the only mobile choice around.  I tried messing around with Windows CE back in the day but the battery kept dying.  But I honestly believed Palm would forever be a staple in mobile computing.  Boy was I ever wrong!

I appreciated the Russians pointing this out to me.

More and more of the “Palms” that are sold are being used with Windows Mobile.  With that, I’m thinking development on a Palm OS application will be on hold.  I’d rather keep my pennies and put them towards something which may be worthwhile:  The Google Phone.  With it’s imment release within the next month, I see possibilities here as well.  And the way these programmers are working, it would only be a few weeks from release to implementation.

For anyone thinking of designing a mobile app, it should go iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and then Google Phone.  This, of course, may change within the next few months depending on the success the Google Phone has.

But after reading all the hate generated against Apple and the iPhone, the Google Phone will be a breath of fresh air.
