Two Step Website Design For Marketing
Posted on February 14, 2008 - Filed Under Business |
The on-line website design and marketing has fallen squarely on my shoulders. To be honest: it is thrilling to learning this marketing stuff. I just hope my liver holds out.
My approach to the website design is different from the past. This time, I’m letting the rules of marketing guide the site design. Two marketing principles are guiding me.
The first: Your customers must know you, like you, and trust you.
The second: Educate your customers, don’t sell.
First: Know you, Like You, Trust you
How does a business achieve that on-line? We all know web browsers spend about 1.2 seconds looking at a web page before deciding whether to leave or not. So how do you convince a prospect that they “know you, like you, trust you” within 1.2 seconds?
I’m glad you asked.

Ask and ye shall receive
Second: Educate, don’t sell
No claims are being made that catalog style websites are evil. To each his own. A catalog style website relies upon large selection. My business has ‘a’ product.
The path my business website is taking revolves around becoming a world-class resource, containing information and links the prospect would find invaluable. Ideally the website would be book marked since it is full of useful information.
Summary
Interestingly enough, the layout and content of the website is practically already decided before any designing takes place. In my experience with building websites for small business, it is nearly always the opposite. People know what kind of whiz-bang functionality and style they want but no clue what material belongs on the site.

You could have spent those four years in college getting a degree in this… Imagine what your liver would look like today if you had done that instead of studying all that useless stuff such as science, engineering, and computers!
AI, believe it or nuts I get the joke.
When first reading your comment, a moment contemplation forced me to look at a scenario. Knowing what I know how, what would I do differently if I could go back.
I’m not 100% positive I would change something.
I must have missed the post where you explained what business the website is for?
