Some Self Indulgence

Published by Clifford at 4:34 am under Personal

Before stepping foot into the real estate world, some command decisions were made regarding my finances.

Television and Cable

To have the internet and cable tv was around $85/month.  Since I was about to assume a larger than life mortgage payment, I decided it was time to cut tv out of my life altogether.  No more worrying about broken tv’s or tv repair . . . no more spending 5 hours a day watching Law and Order.

Three years has past since cable tv resided in my house.  Last week, the fast was broken; the service renewed.  The house were I currently reside will continue to be my humble abode for at least the next few months.  Why not have it?

Once the decision was made, my next step was to do something I hadn’t done in 10 years . . .

The Quest for the Holy Television

The television world has gone and gotten itself into a bit hurry!  HD this.  LCD that.  HDMI is what again?  What is this PbY stuff?  Isn’t PB the atomic symbol for lead?

Imagine handing cro-magnon man a remote control and watching him first try and eat it, second try and bang it on the ground.  That was me.  Except I have shorter hair.  And I don’t stink.

A TV was purchased.  Guilt quickly followed.  No, not “buyer’s remorse” but a guilt knowing I could have put the money into the houses.  Maybe fix something or improve something.

Then something interesting happened.

The DVD player started playing.  Suddenly, I could see every hair in Jason Bourne’s nose as the car next to him exploded.  The explosion blew me back at least six feet.  My eye brows were singed.  Dirt and dust covered me head to toe.

Funny.  The guilt completely disappeared after that.

I gave up TV about 3 years ago, too. Can’t say I miss it much. I got hooked on those stupid reality shows and finally decided I needed to cut the cable if I ever wanted to get anything accomplished.

Alright already– confess. Which TV did you get? We’re in the market and I’m desperate to see up Matty D’s nose :-)
    Details, details!

HD is a wonderful thing. My two hd tvs are relatively small, one about 17″ in my office and a 34″ in the living room. I think anything bigger would be creepy. Imagine watching the Rolling Stones in concert and seeing Mick Jaggers face close up? Yeah, not so much.

Steph, fortunately I believe 90% of what is on tv is pure garbage anyway. Reality shows included. :)
Connie, 26″ LCD HDTV Insignia. I found a website which offered online coupons for Best Buy and ordered it online for an in-store pick up. The TV with 4-year extended warranty was $520. And it is plenty big!

Jared, it is my belief that Keith Richards died a few years ago. It’s just that no one has told him yet.
