Battle of the Kitchens

Lowes versus HD versus IKEA.

Up today: IKEA

Per the computer program on IKEA’s website, my kök with appliances will cost $2795.  For those who don’t know what kök is, it is Swedish for "kitchen".  It is also Klingon for "death".  Take your pick.

The kitchen software program is horrible.  But I did manage to capture some screen shots.

The first is the overall layout.  Yes, the numbers are upside down.  After the design was done, I realized the kitchen had been drawn backwards.  Rather than battle the software for another hour I decided rotating it was faster.

"Not too bright of Clifford", you may be thinking.  Well just remember I’m an aerospace engineer.  I work on airplanes.

The second is a "3-D" view of what the kitchen will look like.  The refrigerator is facing the wrong direction.  Oops.  Because I am college educated, I can figure out the "correct" direction for the fridge before it’s installed.

The price tag of $2795 is encouraging.  Taxes not included.  And knowing IKEA, this probably doesn’t include screws, nuts or bolts.  I can see it now.  All the cabinets, spread all over the place, ready for installation.  Suddenly, the realization hits:  Where are the screws?.  This means I would become angry, curse and swear, go buy them, then complain about it in a blog entry.

Too much drama.

Looks like 9 cabinets only. Isn’t getting the HD maple cabinets going to be alot cheaper? But now I remember, with HD cabinets you have to buy the doors separate.

Kenric, I’m running the numbers side by side to see what the difference would be. But I didn’t know HD sold the doors separately. I’ll ask when I get over there.

I don’t see a dishwasher. You ARE putting in a dishwasher at that rental price, right? Also, it looks like you have a tall pantry to the right of the sink with a space between the sink cabinets and the pantry. What goes there? Would the refrigerator fit there?

AI, it has always been my intention to live in the back house. I only mentioned the rent once, in the event that I have to rent this place out. But I still need a place to live.

To answer your question, no dishwasher. I had a choice between having three floor cabinets or two cabinets and a dishwasher. Since there’s going to be a stackable washer/dryer, the dishwasher was left off the list.

Hope you sized the cabinets to make the dishwasher retrofit easy… Women will NOT rent places without dishwashers. At least you got the laundry inside the house. Is the stacked laundry unit going next to the pantry?
