Ikea Sticker Shock

Published by Clifford at 5:34 am under Housing

It was a dark, stormy night.  We find our hero standing in the kitchen section of IKEA: the devil’s playground.

Clifford:  How in the name of all that’s pure and holy do you spend $21,000 at IKEA on a kitchen?
IKEA Employee:  Vvälkomna!  I’m full of sugar and spice!  We only carry top quality products.
Clifford:  I don’t understand.  I had a custom made kitchen, installed in my house for only $18,000 and that was custom made!  Yours is all pre-made!  What’s this stuff floating in the air?
IE:  Pixey dust.  We do installation too!
Clifford:  Eight grand for countertops?  I could get granite for 1/4 of that price!
IE:  But it won’t look Swedish.  I love unicorns!
Clifford:  Look Swedish?  It’s IKEA crap!
IE:  Please sir, don’t use dirty four letter words.  We’re a family store.
Clifford:  You’re right.  I apologize.  IKEA is the worst four letter word you can say.  I always brush my teeth after saying it.  Please tell me the average kitchen is not $21,000?
IE:  Oh no, you can get kitchens cheaper than that.  You want to try some Swedish Meatballs?
Clifford:  Now there’s hope.
IE:  You can go to our website, download our software, and design a kitchen.  Let’s play "Mother May I".
Clifford:  OK!  I’ll go first!

After a long, hot, sterilizing shower I grabbed my macbook and went to IKEA’s software section of their kitchen site.  Of course, there’s the phrase "The planner tool does not support MAC operating systems"

Are they trying to piss me off here?

Did you ever have one of those days where your alarm sounds and you just don't want to get up? I had one of those recently.

I found the Lowes cabinet prices to be cheaper than IKEA when I compared comparably sized cabinets with similar doors. IKEA is not cheap, unless you buy the cheapest stuff they sell. For example, the upholstered furniture is not particularly high quality, and it’s pricier than, say, Levitz.

Stick with HD or Lowes, I know you hate them! Plus you’ve got that 10% coupon.

AI, I think you’re right. Even if there is a few dollars difference, the price is made up by the fact that the IKEA cabinets require assembly. Lowes or HD are pre-assembled.

Kenric, believe it or nuts I”m starting to warm up to HD. There are four in my area and I’ve learned the one I hate everyone hates. But the other three are showing promise!

I included the 10 percent coupon in my calculations. I have never found IKEA to be cheaper on any item when compared to competing retailers.

Despite all the horror stories about American Woodmark, we had no problems with the Shenendoahs. They arrived a few days early with no damage. They look nice, and all the doors and drawers operate smoothly.

For some reason, I find all of Ikea’s junk expensive.

for something that you have to assemble yourself, it’s way too expensive. but i guess that explains why the founder is a Billionaire!

anyway, can you check out my new blog (and blogroll me too please).
