Prepping for Painting: Sanding

Posted on July 17, 2007 - Filed Under Housing |

Why sand before painting?  Well, it’s not because I’m bored.

Sanding
helps the primer grip the paint which is already on the wall.  A nice
coarse paper equals quick sanding.  For me, the walls are the easiest.
A large chunk of wood (palm size) and wrap it in sand paper.  Within
minutes, the walls of a room are finished.

The most challenging aspect of sanding: trim.  All those little grooves and valleys . . .ugh.

A
friend of mine loaned me a hand-sander.  Built during the Nixon
administration, this piece of technology vibrated with a force large
enough to register on the richter scale.  It was used on all the doors
until it’s untimely death Saturday, July 14th at 4:49 p.m.  There was
still about five miles of unfinished trim.

Seven hours was
enough for a Saturday.  I thought if I left the sander overnight, it
would magically fix itself.  Or the Easter Bunny would make an
extremely late delivery with a new sander.

No such luck.

You suck, Easter Bunny.

Because
of a conscience (thanks Mom!), guilt rode beside me to Lowes to buy a
replacement for my friend.  In the end this turned out to be a blessing
is disguise.  The new, improved, ergonomic sander ate the paint right
off the trim.  In about half the time!  And half the decibels!

I wasn’t quite like the Norse God Thor, wielding his giant hammer.  But I was pretty close.

A few hours later, the trim was finished.

I am Spartacus.
