Bartering for services

Posted on July 12, 2007 - Filed Under Philosophy |

All of the interior painting must be done in one day.

Hiring a crew would cost several thousands.  Fortunately, I can save this money by painting myself.  But I can’t pay it myself.

Several friends have helped along the way, giving a few hours here and there.  I repay their generosity by treating them to lunch.  But now we have a whole day.

So I bartered.  A friend was having problems with his website, lasting several weeks.  I gave him my knowledge and fixed his site in about 2 hours.  In exchange, he is giving me an entire day of his services.

I think I got the better end of that deal.

Bartering for services is an $8 billion dollar industry.  I don’t need all $8 billion.  Maybe several thousands.  I’m not greedy.

In my humble opinion, this is a form of currency not utilized often enough.  Certainly I would rather program for someone and have them provide me with free refinished hardwood floors.

But I don’t think that will happen.
