Kitchen Remodeling Budget

Posted on July 3, 2007 - Filed Under Housing |

It occurred to me that I never delved into the budget for the kitchen remodel.  This might explain why the $9500 quote from Lowes was rejected.

My overall budget is $32,000.

For the kitchen, the budget was set at $10,000.  This was a semi-arbitrary number based on the remodel on the last house.  The last kitchen was around $25,000.  That number still makes me sick (even though the kitchen looks great).

Lowes can provide the four appliances (stove, microwave, fridge, dishwasher) for $3000 which includes delivery and installation.  The granite counter-tops are budgeted at $2000.  Since I went to a public school, I can use some advanced math.

$10,000 (total budget) - $3,000 (appliances) - $2,000 (Granite) = $5000 for cabinets.

So $5,000 has been my target on cabinets.

One place has been found which has the cabinets for $6600.  Negotiation may bring this down $500 but in the end I will still be $1100 over budget.

Some targets for further cost savings:  Coupons from Lowes.  That could knock another $300 off the appliances.  For the granite, the estimate was figured high so potentially that could save another $300.

My target is still $10,000.  Realistically the cost for this remodel may be closer to $10,500.

    Thoroughly enjoyed this post.

    Real #s

    Hard targets

    Comparisons to past expenditures

    A plan of action

It should all be this way. Very good.

I second the notion that $2K sounds way, way low for installed granite countertops.

I went with the slightly cheaper solid-surface countertops for the last house and that ended up being about $1,800 for 35 sq. ft of countertops, installation included.

I really only have one prior experience to draw from. This is my second which will give me a great point to draw a more accurate budget on the next project.

The more projects I do, the more accurate my budgets will be.
