Trust Issues

Some people have the work ethic of an drunk monkey.
To say that my patience had "worn thin" would be an understatement. I pay someone to do a job and what do I get in return? Babysitting. For some reason, the guys I hired to do a job can’t function unless I’m standing over top of them.
Take for instance the Handyman. I paid him to do a job. Giving him a key, he had unfettered access to the house to work while I was away. I realized, after a few weeks, that his work day actually started at 3:25 p.m. Why 3:25 p.m.?
I’m glad you asked.
Because I normally get home around 3:30 p.m.
And upon entering the house, he would say "Cliff, how are you? I’ve been working real hard!"
"Why yes you have," I would say, "You pounded three nails today instead of two!"
This forced me to pull pop inspections. I would disappear from my desk and reappear at the house, just to see if anything was going on. Of course, I would call his cell number and he would never answer. Perhaps the juke-box at the bar was turned up too loud.
Last Thursday was not like last year.
A hectic day fatigued me. As the hour approached 4:30, I realized I had not heard from WonderWoman regarding the hot water heater replacement. My blue-tooth chirped as I spoke "Call WonderWoman" as if I were in a Star Trek movie.
"Oh yeah we finished hours ago," was her response.
Refreshing is a wonderful, accurate word to describe the sensation when I say "Do it." and it gets done, correctly.

This is why I hate having a management role. Trying to motivate people to do things. But here I am puzzled - I can understand that these guys might prioritize another job ahead of yours but you seem to be saying the guy was at your house and goofing off. Is he paid by the hour? If he is paid by the job that would be real weird. Need to get the incentive structure right.
Moom, I’m going to chat about this in an upcoming post. Stay tuned!
