Les petites choses

My life has been in a funk lately.  Lethargic, grumpy, poop-head are all accurate adjectives to describe my mood as of late.

Since my return, my life has pretty much turned into a blur.  Between not knowing where I’m staying week to week, shopping for another project, and doing some other "real estate stuff", all of those little things in my life have been ignored.

Those little things which make life worth living.

Those people, those activities which don’t involve real estate were essentially ignored.  Not because of some ill-will but rather they never fell onto the "top priority" list.

One person who has been neglected has been my French instructor.  Our relationship has transcended that of a "teacher-student" relationship and has become a "grandmother-grandson" conversation.  My grandmother died, when I was little, and I never really knew a "grandmother" until I got to know my instructor.

After two months of silence on my part, I shattered that with a phone call.

"Oh Cleeef!!  Je suis contente de te parler!!  Ca va toi?"

Afterwards, I felt much better.  Not only because I had exercised the French part of my brain but because she sounded so happy.  That made me feel good.

In the machine of our lives, we always have the big responsibilities . . .the large pistons, the large gears moving our lives forward.  The little things, les petites choses, acts as the lubricant to keep our lives running smoothly.  And much as the large moving parts requires maintenance and abhors neglect, so does the lubricant.

I made it a point to reserve an afternoon to spend with my French grandma.  Undoubtedly she’ll tell me all about Christmas with her kids and grand-kids, she’ll tell me about her new French classes she has, and how people in the US can’t drive.
