"Change your thoughts and you change your world." - Norman Vincent Peale
News has come down the pipeline. In my workplace, the "powers to be" are merging two sites into one. Site A, where I work, is being taken over by site B. For those of you who have worked in corporate america this usually means layoffs are coming.
Normally I wouldn’t care. This situation is different however. I’ve always had this unique niche to fill, whereas I’m the only person who knows how to generate the Red TPS Reports. Well, the RED TPS Reports are being phased out for the Blue TPS Reports. And Site B has 5 people who are fully trained in the Blue Reports.
During a conversation the other day, someone mentioned tuning up the resumes. Possibly jumping on Monster.com or maybe Dice.com. This brought back the nightmare I experienced as a child. It was the day I experienced orange juice in my mouth after brushing my teeth.
I’ve come so far since last year. Hunting for another job feels like I’m taking a step backwards. Moving backwards is contradictory to me. I’ve spent my entire life looking forward. This has served me well.
While I realize there is a long ways between today and the consolidation, I am treating this as very real. I’m going to work on increase my investing through some other channels that I’m exploring.
Of course I’ll report back what I learn.
The most important item I must do is set real hard objectives for myself. This means setting real numbers to paper with real deadlines.

Allow me to provide your readers with further elucidation on this matter as I’ve recently tunneled under the wall and escaped from TPS report hell. Your assumption that Site B is taking over is quite correct. The red TPS reports aren’t the only thing that will be phased out. It’s highly likely that all remnants of site A will be flung away like yesterday’s canceled NASA contract.
You have several options. The first - accelerating your speed down the path to financial independence - would be the most pleasant. However, a couple fall back plans - oops, fall forward plans
would be prudent. Site C up the road is hiring people. Head up there before the hoards from Site A and Site D compete with you for these jobs. The other plan is to tunnel under the wall and escape like me.
Now I don’t want to sound negative. I continue to be impressed with your entrepreneurial bent; but it’s likely that you’ll be working a day job for a while. Make it a good one. Make it a safe one (to the degree that’s possible these days). And make it a fun one.
Remember the primary lesson from the housing remodel: cycle time is everything. Get out now before you and your red TPS reports are replaced.
Engineer X, thank you for your input.
I’m working on figuring out exactly where I am today. Knowing that, I can better formulate a strategy complete with defined objectives and goals.
Of course I’ll reveal all.
Wow, I have BEEN THERE! I took the eek-by-like-a-church-mouse option and have not regretted it–well, except for the days that Victoria’s Secret sends me a new catalog. I have so far been able to keep my robbery of our company till to a minimum. But, I’m living slim…for now. And, if you don’t have a company till, well, it seems your choice is made for you.
But, hey, would you get a nice severance package if you waited for the layoff? And, how is the unemployment pay there? I think you could give yourself a little time to find a job you enjoy, rather than jumping at the first thing that comes along.
Trisha, Actually there’s a nice severance package.
I actually would receive a 60 day notice of the layoff. During those 60 days, I have no work or responsibilities. The company will assist me in finding a new job and my schedule is flexible to allow for interviewing.
At the end of the 60 days, I would receive 1 week’s worth of pay for every year that I’ve been with the company (8 years). I would also receive all my vacation time/sick time in a check as well.
Much like my scared tenant, if I were to run away from the company right now then I would be giving up a HUGE chunk of money. In exchange for what? Another job that offers practically no job security?
Investing is the life for me!
