Nip it . . .

"Something doesn’t look right," Anne said, standing in my kitchen.

I have become exasperated to the point where I’m missing many details.  Work is progressing and once again I feel like this project can be completed sometime this year.

That is until Anne pointed out this serious problem.

And it irks me.

Do you see it?

Yeah, it’s pretty hideous.

My "custom cabinets" are not all the same.  For some reason, Cabinetman made these two cabinets 8 inches too short.  Why don’t they go all the way to the ceiling like the rest?  It looks hideous!  The stand alone cabinet, in the first photo, looks like I just bought it at Home Depot and slapped it on the wall.

All the cabinets start out at the same point on the wall but they don’t end at the same point.

And it’s just these two.  Every other cabinet goes all the way to the ceiling.

A closer inspection of the two cabinets revealed dust and saw dust.  Granted, a lot of work has been done on my kitchen.  However none of the other cabinets are dirty or dusty.  Then a thought hit me.  "I wonder if Cabinetman just had these two cabinets in storage from another job . . . and just decided to put them on my wall to get rid of them."

I shudder to think that’s really the case.

Does anybody out there thinks that this may be normal?  Or that this looks alright?

I’ve been working there for a few weeks now, and never noticed! I did look at some online pictures of high end kitchen cabinets, and found where the cabinets are installed at different heights. Some have plants over them or other decorate items.

    Hope the link works…

Hey Cliff! I think it would look better if there was a balance, say a lower cabinet on either side of the ones that go all the way to the ceiling, but there is nothing wrong with mixed height cabinets (or mixed depth for tha matter). When we lived in the high-end “Eagles Landing” neighborhood (with $1,000,000+ homes), this was very common. Our house had mixed height and depth and it added a very nice touch to the ceiling. As Mikki said above, many people put plants on top, or other decorative items. We’ve even seen a decorative rail in some homes. I would question cabinetman on the differences in the look (beyond the height). It does seem odd that only 1 of the “custom” cabinets are dusty/dirty. Goodluck! - Cindy

The stand alone cabinet doesn’t look good. It should go all the way to the ceiling. The one stepped down on the end looks OK though. My mom’s cabinets do that, and although it pains me to compliment anything related to that cheap mid ’70s thrown together house, the collection of cookie/biscuit tins and things she has on top make it look pretty good. But you should definitely change the other one.

What’s up with the granite counter tops?

I thought about trying to decorate the uneven cabinets. But with what? But you’re right. I have to put something up there. If not, then a spider will call it home. And we all know what I think about spiders.

I think it looks fine. Alot of kitchens have cabinets like that. I wouldn’t change anything at all. In the long run a shortened cabinet will not make or break you when you sell.
