Cosmetics

"You’re doing a remodel?"  This question was repeated back to me at each appliance store I visited.  I began to wonder if these people had some "parrot" in them.  Dollar signs gleam in their eye until I burst their bubble with "I’m comparative shopping right now."

My plan is to refit the kitchen with all stainless steel appliances: dishwasher, stove, microwave and refrigerator.  I am thinking all the appliances should be the same manufacturer, with the same look and feel.  Since I’m selling the houses, I’m mentally prepared to leave all these appliances behind for the happy person (or couple) who purchase this darling little home.

Something new fell into my field of vision: refrigerator with removable door panels.

My question:  Does removable door panels really add something to a kitchen?

If I’m talking to potential buyers, would it be a great selling point to say that the refrigerator has removable panels?  What if I had Cabinetman make me some panels to match the new cupboards/cabinets?  Would that look slick or gaudy?  Would people fall down on their knees in front of me, thanking me for this gift?

Ideas, s’il vous plaît?

I suggest that if you are changing out appliances, change them out for inexpensive ones that match cosmetically. If you are thinking of selling this year, have a realtor or two from the area come in and give you advice. It can be fun to deck out the house real nice, but remember, you are trying to be an investor here; over improving the house for the neighborhood it’s in is tantamount to throwing money away. You can have fun, but keep in mind what your true goal is here. Just some helpful advice.

I’ve done many kitchens and if you are selling, go with the decent but cheap stainless steel or black. You could get a frig, microhood, dishwasher and stove for about $3000 total. For your type of home, it won’t make that much difference in the appliances are $3000 or $5000. If you are going with maple cabinets and black granite, black appliances will look fine and be a few hundred cheaper.

If possible, granite the backsplash or put some 4″ tile on a diagonal. It looks alot better than white drywall.

Remember to get some brushed satin nickel knobs and pulls from Ebay to finish the look.
