Being neighborly

I am new to this "neighbor" thing.

Living in apartments most of my life, my neighbors were nothing more than ghosts that floated in and out of these doors in the hallway.  I never really knew them and they definitely didn’t know me.  Except for an occasional "Am I making too much noise?", conversation between myself and the other tenants was non-existent.

In this house, my neighbors are actually "neighborly".

A few weeks back, I was out of town for a few days.  My neighbors actually noticed that my car was gone for several days and became concerned.

My next door neighbor, who is built like a pro-wrestler, is very kind.  He helped me get my fridge into my house and put it together.  I felt bad because I didn’t have anything really to offer him and he replied "It’s no problem.  We’re neighbors!"

Well, that didn’t cut it for me.

Socrates, my new yard guy, was cutting my grass.  I knew that my neighbor needed his grass cut really bad (as did I).  I told Socrates to cut the neighbors grass for a month.  I would pay for it.  The cost to me:  $25.

Later that night, Neighbor came and knocked on my door.  Upon opening it, he asked me how much he owed for the grass.  I smiled and told him "It’s no problem.  We’re neighbors!"

Yes, I’m going to enjoy this whole "being neighborly" thing.
